Dear Parents,
Tomorrow is February 1st! That means 4th, 5th, & 6th graders will be celebrating Valentine’s Day soon by having a Valentine’s Day Cupcake Contest. This competition is a tradition at our school. Participation in the competition is optional. Students are welcome to bake cupcakes or other items that can be individually packaged such as brownies or lemon squares. This year, we will be hosting the competition on Friday, February 14th. The bakers will compete in one of the two categories: Best Tasting or Best Decorated.
Each participant must pledge to do all the measuring and mixing, pouring and baking, decorating, and even cleaning! No adult help is permitted except to put the baked goods into and out of the oven.
Both made-from-scratch recipes and mixes are fine. Frosting, as well, can be handmade or from a can. We recommend non-melting types, as we are unable to refrigerate any of the baked items. Some students like to bake the weekend before and freeze it; then they frost and decorate it the night before to avoid the last minute rush. We’ve had many wonderful, creative baked goods over the years in all shapes and sizes – everything from hamburgers to animals and even a guitar named Fred!
DAY OF COMPETITION: Participants will receive an entry form to complete and submit with their creation. All baked goods are due at school no later than 8:15 AM on Friday, February 14th to be considered for the contest. Since it takes a few minutes to register, it is best to arrive by 8:10 AM or even earlier if possible. Each entrant will receive a certificate for a free baked good; other pieces will be sold at snack and lunch for 50 cents each. The proceeds will be donated to Guardians of Culture Moko Jumbies, a local company dedicated to the preservation of the art of stilt dancing in the VI.
Participants need to return the bottom portion of this form by Friday, February 7th. We hope all will participate. Our best wishes for a sweet Valentine’s Day.
Sincerely,
The Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Grade Teachers ________________________________________________________________________________________
